Monthly Reflections | December

What I'm currently up to in life and on the blog. #currently #takingstock #monthlyreflections

Hello, January!  Where in the world did December go?  The month was full of baking cookies, eating lots of yummy food and enjoying time with family and friends and although it went by quickly, I wouldn't trade the past thirty-one days for anything in the world.

One Little Word | 2016

One Little Word | 2016 - A Simpler Grace
Today, I'm doing a little recap on my One Little Word for 2015 and sharing my word for 2016, along with the goals that come along with that word.

When I sat down to choose my One Little Word last January, I really felt led to the word, "LEARN". I can't say for sure why, but it was stuck in my mind and any other word I debated just didn't measure up.

Good morning, friends, and happy Monday!  I don't know about you, but we had some uncharacteristic temperatures for December here this weekend.  Most of my family was in shorts and t-shirts and we are usually awaiting snow by this time of the year!

Pesto Pasta Bake With Feta & Grilled Chicken | A Recipe

A yummy one-pot dish with feta and grilled chicken. Pesto Pasta Bake with Feta & Grilled Chicken - A Simpler Grace

Today I'm sharing a family favorite recipe that I have probably made about a hundred times in my adult life.  Back when I first got married, I whipped this dish up in a pinch and it has been one of my go-to meals for entertaining.

Monthly Reflections | November

What I'm currently up to in life and on the blog. #currently #takingstock #monthlyreflections

Happy December first!  I can NOT believe how quickly November flew by.  It seemed like yesterday was Halloween and now here we are, Thanksgiving over and Christmas quickly approaching.  I keep trying to dig my heels in.  To slow down time.  To savor every breath, but nothing seems to be working.  Anyway, hello December.

Monday, again... And I have to admit, I've been dreading today.  It's my birthday and I'm feeling particularly old this year, what with everything that has happened in the year so far.  I've never been the kind of person who wanted a big deal made out of my birthday, or any holiday, for that matter.  I don't like to do gifts, cards and you'd better not ever sing 'happy birthday' to me.  I think my mom is doing a birthday cake or something.  I'll let my niece blow out the candles.  At least she'll enjoy it.  I'm not the only one who feels this way, right?  Right??

Simple Gratitude | 08

Today I'm sharing my #gratefulheart on the blog #gratitude #feelingthankful
This post is part of the Grateful Heart Monday linkup with Emily at Ember Grey.

It's been a hectic week and I haven't had much time to think, let alone reflect on the blessings in my life.  I did, however, manage to steal a few quiet moments, here and there, to ground myself and get my mind back in the now.  Too often, we dwell on the past or worry about the future, when we can't change either.  We can only live in the present, in the moment and enjoy it while we have it.

Oh, Monday, we meet again.  Each week, I hesitantly roll out of bed, after the third alarm has been snoozed half a dozen times, and set my feet on the floor.  This morning, I greet you with a big steamy mug of tea and some fuzzy slippers.  It was 80 degrees earlier this weekend and freezing now.  (meh)

In Love on Instagram | Fall 2015

In Love on Instagram | Fall 2015 - A Simpler Grace
I think pretty much most of the world is infatuated with Instagram.  It used to be Facebook, then Twitter, then Pinterest, but Instagram is here to stay.  It allows us a glimpse into someone's life and work in little square images, well-written captions and accompanying hashtags.

Yay!  It's Monday again and we are back with Emily from over at Ember Grey talking about gratitude.  The weeks have been flying by and October is at a close and November is upon us. I simply cannot believe that Thanksgiving is less than a month away and Christmas is only two! Yikes! Let's slow down a bit and jump into what's important.

Monthly Reflections | October

What I'm currently up to in life and on the blog. #currently #takingstock #monthlyreflections

It's the end of yet another month and it seems that no matter how hard I try to dig my heels in, the days just keep flying by.  I'm doing a few things differently these days, including getting outside to enjoy some fresh air and the beauty that surrounds me.  Tomorrow isn't guaranteed, so I'm living each day like it's my last.

S'more Pops

S'more Pops Recipe - A remake of an old favorite treat. via A Simpler Grace
Last weekend, I was hanging out with my niece while my sister was at work.  It was a super rainy and dreary day.  The kid and I were watching some tv and talking about making some s'mores, but we couldn't go outside in the pouring rain, so we came up with a solution.

Today I'm sharing my #gratefulheart on the blog #gratitude #feelingthankful

This post is part of the Grateful Heart Monday linkup with Emily at Ember Grey.

It has been such a very long time since I've written a Simple Gratitude post.  I do keep a gratitude journal for daily tracking, but I have slipped on using it for a while.  In all honesty, some events of the past few months have made me bitter and focus on the negative things, but today, I'm turning over a new leaf and getting back into the swing of keeping my eyes on the blessings in my life.

Monthly Reflections | September

What I'm currently up to in life and on the blog. #currently #takingstock #monthlyreflections

It's been a long time since I've posted consistently here on the blog.  So much has changed since then and I think it's appropriate to reflect on the month, but also the entire summer that I've spent away from my little corner of the internet.

One Month of Essential Oils

One Month of Essential Oils - A Simpler Grace

While the decision to use essential oils is a very personal one, this article is not intended to "prescribe" oils for any specific medical condition.  Doterra essential oils are not regulated or approved by the FDA to treat or cure any disease or medical condition.  The oils I share in this article are ones that I feel have given me relief from certain conditions and side effects.  I was not prompted or compensated by Doterra to share my thoughts on their products.  As always, all opinions are my own.

If you have lived in North American and some parts of Europe over the past several years, chances are, you have heard about essential oils.  I'm not here to sell you oils or to pressure you to sell them yourself, I'm simply here to share my month-long trial and experience with them.

Learning Humility Through Hospitality

Learning Humility Through Hospitality - A Simpler Grace

One of the best ways to learn humility is by serving others, also known as hospitality.  I'm not writing about entertaining, which most would think of when they hear the word.  I'm talking about selfless acts of service.

Dear Me | A Letter to My 16 Year Old Self #DearMe

Dear Me (A Letter to My 16 Year Old Self) #DearMe - A Simpler Grace

I don't get caught up in a lot of blogging/vlogging fads, but there is one that started going around a few months ago that I couldn't pass up.  It is called "Dear Me" and it is based on the book by the same name in which people share letters to their sixteen-year-old selves.  Somehow, a challenge was started for writers, bloggers and vloggers to share their letters on their respective home base sites.

This is mine.

Simple Gratitude | 03

Today I'm sharing my #gratefulheart on the blog #gratitude #feelingthankful

The weeks are starting to run together as they usually do when we hit May.  The days are longer and the school year is wrapping up and it seems like everyone is go, go, going all the time.

If you've been hanging around the blog over the last few weeks, you'll notice that I have not been maintaining my normal posting schedule.  I'll be going into more detail as to why this is later in the week, but today's post will be the re-start or my normal blogging calendar.

Reading Challenges for 2015 | The List

Reading Challenges for 2015 | The List - A Simpler Grace

If you remember back at the beginning of this year, I shared that I would be participating in the 50 Books in 2015, and a few other reading challenges as part of my 101 goals in 1001 days. Today, I'm going to share the full list that I am reading this year (although there are many other books I'm planning on diving into as well).

Monthly Reflections | March

What I'm currently up to in life and on the blog. #currently #takingstock #monthlyreflections

I was recently visiting Anna on her blog Rich as Kings and I fell in love with a monthly post she wrote called Taking Stock. It's sort of a monthly recap of everything she's been up to in little nibbles of thoughts.  She had a blank template at the bottom of her post and offered it up to anyone who wanted to use the format.  I couldn't resist.

Vegan Cinnamon Oatmeal Cookies

Vegan Cinnamon Oatmeal Cookies - A Simpler Grace #vegan #cookies #recipe
I've been interested in trying my hand at creating a recipe using some of my favorite ingredients - cinnamon and oats, so I spent an entire snowy day in the kitchen measuring ingredients, testing, eating and measuring more ingredients before I got the recipe exactly how I wanted it.  Here is what I came up with.

Rich Chocolate Brownie Recipe

A super-simple brownie recipe. Rich Chocolate Brownies - A Simpler Grace #brownies #recipe

I originally shared this recipe on my first blog, Simple Life Happy Wife, and the photos were  watermarked for that post. The recipe remains the same and is still one of our favorites.

My family LOVES brownies and since they are such a treat, I try to make them at least once a month to share with them. We like them best when they are chewy on the edges and fudgy in the middle.  I have a trusted recipe I've been using for years and thought I'd share it with you.

Ten Tips to Simplify Your Morning Routine

Ten Tips to Simplify Your Morning Routine - A Simpler Grace

Back when I was a nine-to-fiver, I would often find myself bolting out the door twenty minutes late and grabbing a quick breakfast on the way to work - or worse yet, skipping breakfast all together. Only when I made it to work would I realize I was wearing mismatched shoes or that I forgot to put my makeup on.  If you can relate to the scenario I've just shared, you know how having a morning like this can throw your entire day off kilter.  Today I'll share some tips to help you start your busy weekday mornings off right - without having to rush or forget things.

Norwegian Heart Baskets - A Valentine's Day Tutorial

Norwegian Heart Baskets | A Valentine's Tutorial - A Simpler Grace

Today's DIY tutorial is actually a Christmas craft from northern Europe.  That's right - the julehjerte is a woven heart basket many Germans, Dutch and Norwegians make and hang on their Christmas trees as a decoration.  I'm switching things up a little and using them as homemade valentines because they are so darn cute.

My One Word for 2015

One Little Word | 2015 - A Simpler Grace

You might be familiar with the "one word" movement.  If not, it's a pretty simple concept.  Instead of having a list of resolutions for the New Year, you choose one word that encompasses your goals.

I fell in love with the idea of choosing a word that would mean something and carry through the year rather than setting a bunch of goals that will never truly last more than a few months.  I spent a lot of time thinking about what my word would be.  I thought about the goals I set last year and which ones I accomplished and which ones I still needed work on.
