"Happiness is like a butterfly which, when pursued, is always beyond our grasp, but, if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you." - Nathaniel Hawthorne (as quoted by Kay Wills Wyma in I'm Happy For You.

Every so often, a book comes out that clicks a lightbulb on in your head and makes all those seemingly crazy thoughts you've been having makes sense.  This was the book for me.

In just the first chapter, Kay Wills Wyma talks about how she spends her "quiet" moments alone in front of the computer, scrolling through Facebook and essentially wondering why she didn't have the life her friends had, why she wasn't invited to the same parties and why her living room didn't look as perfect as the ones she saw on Pinterest.

We've all been guilty of this behavior, at one time or another, and this book puts the nail in it.  We are a culture wrecked by comparison and we can't help ourselves.  We want the same, expensive car our neighbors have.  We want the body of the woman on the treadmill next to you at the gym.  We want the job a relative has that we think we deserve.  It's called obsessive comparison disorder.

I'm Happy For You (Sort Of...Not Really) shows us how to break free from the mental anguish and start appreciating what we have instead of obsessing over someone else's life.  My favorite chapter, The Dangers of Yardstick Living, tells us we will never truly measure up if we continue to compare ourselves to others.

This is a great book for anyone looking for a breezy, fun read,  The author adds humor to a serious problem and gives her tips for appreciating YOUR life instead of coveting another's.  We can all use this advice, right?
