Dear Future Husband | A Marriage Letter

Dear Future Husband | A Marriage Letter - A Simpler Grace - Three promises to the man who steals my heart.

Dear Future Husband,

Lately, I've been thinking a lot about promises. Specifically, the broken kind.

Promises are easily made but not-so-easily kept and it's because of these broken promises, we both tug behind us bags filled with hurt and anger and distrust from our past. If you are reading this, it is because one day, I will stand with you before our family, friends and God and make a promise of forever to you.

Before it's time to make that vow, however, I wanted to share with you some smaller, but no-less-important promises that I will uphold throughout our lives together.

The future is uncertain and I can't promise that our lives will be perfect. I can't promise you that we will never fight or that our relationship won't need patching up after weathering the storms we will surely face together. I can't even promise that this stubborn girl of yours won't hold her ground even when she knows she should stand down. That's what I can't promise you but here's what I can...

I PROMISE TO ALWAYS STAND BY YOUR SIDE
Through the ups and downs in life, you will always have a partner, a friend, and a confidante. I will choose you every day of my life. I will have your back and hold your hand in the good and bad. No matter what lies on the path ahead, I will be there next to you.

I PROMISE TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR HEART
Your heart is a precious thing and although it may have a tough exterior, what lies beneath is nothing short of beautiful. I will always speak and act as if I am carrying your heart with me. I will do my best to stitch up the wounds that linger from days gone by. I'll treat it with respect, kindness and gentleness and I will always do my best to protect it.

I PROMISE TO LEARN YOUR LANGUAGE AND SPEAK IT
Actions speak louder than words and that's why I promise to learn and speak your love language and give you the things you need. Whether it's your first cup of coffee in the morning or a hug after a long, tough day, I will do my best to be mindful of your needs and do things to show you that you are loved.

No matter what life throws our way, my love, I will always promise you these things.

All my heart,

Your Future Wife

  2. "Learn your language..." that's so crucial. Many years ago,I read the book "The Five Love Languages," and that really was a game changer for me as far as teaching me how to nurture people in ways they could receive and appreciate. What a lovely letter! Thanks for sharing.

  4. i love this. I think it takes both people to really look at their partner and bring something to the table that is 100% selfless. Promises that you can keep are worth more than gold in a relationship. what a wonderful read!

  5. I know who my future husband is at this point, and it's crazy!! I never in a million years thought I would be getting married. No one who knows me ever thought so too. I am so thankful for this bad. SO THANKFUL that words cannot describe it. He puts up with ME. I am hard to handle. Very hard to handle. But I have fallen, and for him I will do anything.
