If you are new to the idea of cultivating a simple life, the name Joshua Becker might not ring a bell for you, but for those who are into minimalism, he's a household name. Author of several books and founder of the blog Becoming Minimalist, he literally wrote the book on minimalism. The More of Less is that book.

I received my copy of The More of Less this past spring and have intentionally taken my time as I read through it - with a highlighter, pen, and stack of sticky notes. The book is dotted with my notes about how I can apply the principles Becker shares in my own life.

This is not one of those books that shares a complex set of steps you need to take in order to minimize your life. It's also not the book that will tell you to sell all your possessions and live in a box the rest of your life. Becker believes in owning things. He believes in taking small steps to find the right level of minimalism for you and what makes you happy.

Minimalism: the intentional promotion of the things we most value and the removal of anything that distracts us from them.

He was first introduced to the idea of minimalism when he was cleaning his garage out one holiday weekend - stalling his son who wanted to play with him - when his neighbor shared a novel idea, "You don't need to own all this stuff." What started as small talk between neighbors sparked a grand idea in Becker's mind and he and his family immediately began paring down their belongings to the things that truly brought value to their lives.

The principles Becker shares in The More of Less are simple and you can start using them right now. You don't need to go out and purchase tons of storage or organizing equipment - in fact, he encourages you not to. He simply wants you to take a close look at your "stuff" and realize how much of it is weighing you down and keeping you from doing the things you really want to do in life.

What could you do with the extra space in your home if you let go of some of the clutter? The extra money you'd save by not having to pay for storage or maintenance of your belongings? The extra time wasted on cleaning, organizing and storing all those items? How much clearer would your mind be without the junk? In The More of Less, Becker shares not only his own journey to minimalism but also stories from others about how their lives have improved by using the ideas from this book.

This book is life-changing. It has helped me realize the emotional connection I had to some of the stuff I held onto and that I didn't need to store the item in order to keep the memory. I have been able to let go of so much clutter and stress by applying the ideas Becker shares. My life is much better after having read this book. And I think your's will be too.
