"If you want to see the sunshine, you have to weather the storm." - Frank Lane

It's been a hard week. I am definitely going through a stormy season in my life and am learning some big and difficult lessons in it. Before this year, this kind of emotional weather would probably have made me want to run in the other direction, but I'm trying to practice patience, lean into the pain, and wait for the sun to shine again. It's not easy, but I have faith that if I keep trying, something good will come out of it eventually.

Happy Friday, friends. I'm sitting down to send off this post before letting Adriene kick my butt with day 10 of another month-long of yoga. Over the last year, I've come to realize that I am the type of person who functions best when I have a morning routine that doesn't change much, save for the things I can't control. I'm not one of those gals who can work out three times a week and feel like I'm making any progress. I enjoy getting my ass kicked every morning because it makes me feel like I can be productive the rest of the day. How about you? Are you a routine person or a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants person?

Always, Sometimes, Never

15 random things I always, sometimes, or never do.

I've been doing a lot of heavy writing in my freelance and academic fields, so I wanted to share a post that was purely for fun. I did one of these random facts posts about two years ago and it was so interesting to think of some of the quirky habits I keep. I'd love it if you jumped in on the fun and shared something you always, sometimes, or never do in the comments below!

What I Read | July

A look back at what I read last month. #ASGbookshelf #whatIread
It was quite an interesting month, as far as los libros are concerned. I started the month off feeling very underwhelmed by what I was reading. I wasn't connecting with anything and grew bored quickly. Then, about halfway through July, things started looking up. I picked up a new stack of books and was thrilled with them all. This stack included a few children's books, a book about personality types, and my two highlighted reads for the month.

After unplugging from all electronic devices this weekend, including my laptop, I am feeling rested and relaxed. It's amazing how much stress and chaos all those gadgets bring into our lives, even if we only check them occasionally throughout the day.

Here's hoping the weekend is nice and slow and relaxing, but I'm going to schedule in lots of downtime, just in case. What are your weekend plans? Have you done back to school shopping yet? I've gone twice already and I don't even have kids. Hehe!

August 2018 | A Mood Board

My mood board for August. #inspiration #moodboard
"We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty." - Maya Angelou

This summer has been feeling drab, so I wanted to do something fun to spark a little inspiration and creativity in my life. What better way than with a mood board? I created a mood board template and searched the rabbit holes of Pinterest for some images that were speaking to me and this is what I see for the month of August.

Monthly Reflections | July

Wrapping up the month and sharing what I've been up to in life and on the blog. What is your favorite moment of July? #currently
We are now well into the second half of the year. Yikes! I won't make another cliche comment about how fast time is going. I'm sure we are all thinking the same thing. What I will say is this. Because there are just five months left in 2018, I'm trying to be really intentional about how I use my time. I have a lot of things I want to accomplish and big changes coming early next year, so I need to sop up every ounce of time to prepare myself for what's to come. What intentions are you setting for August and the remainder of 2018?

"You must do the things you think you cannot do." - Eleanor Roosevelt

As the month of July comes to a close, I find myself thinking about the new season ahead. Even though summer is not yet over, I often think of August as the beginning of a new season, the turning of a leaf, as students return to school and the slow pace of summertime winds down. I've been thinking about the last seven months of 2018 and all the things I have to be grateful for, but also about the future and what it might hold. I'm going into this new month with purpose and drive. How are you embracing the new month?

Confessions of an Introvert | vol 1

The secret thoughts of someone who prefers to be alone. #introvertproblems
It's no secret that I have the social graces of a hermit crab. I tend to spend more time inside my shell, doing my own thing, than out interacting with the public. Over the years, I have come to fully accept my introverted personality, even when it means that I'm awkward in social situations, I don't engage in small talk, and there are very few people who are close enough to know intimate details about me.

Letting Go of a Goal

Letting go of a goal (when it's no longer in line with your dreams) #goals
A gourmet chocolatier. A jewelry designer. A bookseller. A cookbook writer. A portrait photographer. What if I told you that at one point in my life, I was all of these things? I am the dreamer of big dreams. There are also a handful of other aspirations I've had where I've tucked away little to-do lists for each, hoping that one day, I'd be able to check that particular dream off my list as accomplished.

I'm sharing my #gratefulheart on the blog. What are you grateful for today? #gratitude #feelingthankful

It's been a long time since I've been excited about a Monday. It was a great weekend - one where I unplugged my electronics for most of it - and enjoyed time alone and with my family. Today would have been my brother's 32nd birthday, so everyone got together to do lunch and hang out. Most of my siblings are moving a little further away, so it's so sweet to be able to get everyone together under one roof. There is a chance that I'll be moving to Georgia this winter, so I'm trying to soak up every last drop of family time. Don't ever take it for granted, friends.

Five Things | What I Love About Summer

Five things about my love affair with summertime. #fivethings

I have a love-hate relationship with summer. It's a combination of the insufferable heat and humidity of the Mid-Atlantic region where I've spent my entire life, and the mental furlough I feel among the students breaking from school and neighbors dawdling home from vacation. The repose is too much for this type-A, in-the-saddle kind of gal.

If You and I Had Coffee | vol 26

Join me for a conversation over coffee? #coffeedates

If you and I had coffee...

We'd meet up by the pool with our favorite iced beverages - the only relief we'd have from the heat and humidity. I will have laid claim to one of the big canopy umbrellas and we'd stash our stuff under it before moving to sit at the edge of the pool and dip our feet in the water.

I'm sharing my #gratefulheart on the blog. What are you grateful for today? #gratitude #feelingthankful

My horoscope this week was so spot on, it's scary. It read: "Things in your life have been at a standstill, and you've felt stuck in limbo. There's a decision that needs to be made, but you were having a difficult time deciding what you wanted to do. Your heart was pulling you in one direction while your mind pulled you in the other, and instead of merging them and making a choice, you've allowed things to remain stagnant. July will push you to make the best decision for you, and this decision is one that will have longevity. This month is about trusting your intuition and allowing it to guide you in the right direction."

Yesterday, I was in the pool, laying on a float and staring through my sunglasses up at the sky. The clouds looked like they were close enough to touch. While I was watching them swirl around, the glasses occasionally deflecting a ray of sunshine, I was transported back to when I was ten years old, on a blanket in my backyard, staring up at the very same sky.

Hello July | Goals for Quarter 3

I'm starting the month with some good intentions and a few goals. What is a goal you've set for this month? #goals #goalsetting

Back in May, I flipped the script on how I was going to manage my goals and decided to switch to a quarterly tracking instead of doing these posts every month. This will (hopefully) give me more time to complete the goals, but also allow me to diversify a little bit and add some things that I normally wouldn't have time for in just thirty days. So, buckle up. Here comes the third quarter of 2018.

Monthly Reflections | June

Wrapping up the month and sharing what I've been up to in life and on the blog. What is your favorite moment of June? #currently

I started the month off thinking I was going to knock out this huge list of tasks I'd written up thirty days ago. I had good intentions. Sometimes, life doesn't always go the way we think it is. I got hit out of left field with a couple of things that required me to step back and deal with some very deep and heavy emotional pain. Anxiety soon made its appearance and depression, on its coattails. As soon as I began working through the mental disarray, I became physically ill.

I remember visiting my brother's grave several months after he died. Whenever we would drop by, there would always be some new physical reminder of a memory someone shared with him. My family had flowers and a little butterfly garden flag that hung on a wrought iron stand. Several of his friends brought basketball collectibles. Someone even brought a Matchbox rendition of the car he drove when he was alive.

The newsreel has been hard and heavy this week. If you are human, it's undoubtedly affected you in a deep way. I've had to limit my exposure to small, manageable bites because I'm the type of person who carries the burdens of others, whether I want to or not. There are many of us out there - they call us empaths - and we have to take care to guard our energy as it can so easily be depleted on the things we cannot change alone. Today, I wanted to share some stories that will encourage you or make you smile. Have a blessed weekend, friend.

If You and I Had Coffee | vol 25

Join me for a conversation over coffee? #coffeedates

If you and I had coffee...

I'd meet you at an outdoor cafe in town. We'd snatch a table on the corner of the big patio under the ivy-covered trellis, and we'd both agree to the daily special when the server suggested the customer favorite to us. We'd enjoy the warmth of the sunshine, but smell the rain in the air and would cross our fingers that the poor weather would hold off until later in the day. Gotta love those pop-up June thunderstorms.

What I Read | May + FREE Printable Summer Reading List

A look back at what I read last month + a #FREE summer reading list printable. #ASGbookshelf #whatIread
It was a busy month for books and I managed to meet my goal and read twenty-one books in May. I will say that I felt a bit underwhelmed by a lot of the books on my list. Many of them had rave reviews on Goodreads or were classics that "everyone" loved. Welp, not me. How does it make you feel when you don't connect with a book when it seems like every other reader on the planet has?

What I Learned | Spring 2018

Today I'm sharing the lessons I learned this spring. #whatilearned

Every season, we gather over at Emily P. Freeman's place and share the lessons we've learned. When I think about the seasons of life - the season of rest, of growth, of pruning and of harvest, I sometimes have a difficult time distinguishing the one I'm currently in. It can be frustrating when life events don't come with a label like the little seed packets that line the shelves at the garden center. It's only in retrospect when you realize how much pruning or growth or harvesting you've been able to do.

Monthly Reflections | May

Wrapping up the month and sharing what I've been up to in life and on the blog. What is your favorite moment of May? #currently
I woke up one morning a few weeks ago and had this resolve in my heart. I was DONE with all the bs. I was tired of the childish games so many people like to play. I was giving myself permission to walk away from the drama. I tend to get bored in situations that don't seem to be going anywhere. It's the Sagittarius in me. I need progression. It doesn't have to be linear, so long as I'm moving.

What I Read | April

A look back at what I read last month. #ASGbookshelf #whatIread

Hi May. Although I'm excited to jump into some great books for this new month, I need to wrap up the month of April first. I read a whole lot of books last month and I had some very strong feelings about a lot of them. Some I loved. Some I hated. Some stirred some deep emotions in me and made me delete the book from my Kindle and then write an essay in response. Let's jump in!

Hello May | Goals

I'm starting the month with some good intentions and a few goals. What is a goal you've set for this month? #goals #goalsetting

Happy May! If you read yesterday's post, you already know that April was a bad month. I've spent the last few weeks battling incredible brain fog, which is one of the lovely side effects of my adrenal condition. To give you an idea of how pathetic this situation was, I could sit in front of a simple email, reading it several times over, and not be able to comprehend what it was saying. I was having trouble forming complete sentences and was sleeping non-stop. It was scary.

"Some birds are not meant to be caged, that's all. Their feathers are too bright, their songs too sweet and wild. So you let them go, or when you open the cage to feed them, they somehow fly out past you. And the part of you that knows it was wrong to imprison them in the first place rejoices, but still, the place where you live is that much more drab and empty for their departure." - Stephen King
