If You and I Had Coffee | vol 49

Join me for a conversation over coffee? #coffeedates

If you and I had coffee...

We'd meet up for a quick chat because it's been a hectic season but we still want to try to make the effort to fit a little time in for our visit. We'd order our beverages of choice through the contactless service at the local cafe and pick out a little table on the quiet outdoor patio. Here, the COVID restrictions are being tightened again because the numbers are going up, so we are both happy to have chosen this cafe and not the ultra-popular one down the road.

If you and I had coffee...

I'd ask how you've been and we'd both agree that we are tired. This year has been exhausting and hard and there are so many things going on, it feels chaotic. I mention that I am ready to wake up from this bad dream and return to a life that feels somewhat normal again. I am feeling discouraged, for sure, and hope that the rest of the year brings some happy days.

If you and I had coffee...

I'd ask if you've watched Hamilton yet. I saw it the weekend it began streaming on Disney+, so I was super late to the game, but I love it. I've already seen it a few times and plan to watch it again soon. I think I've shared this with everyone I know, but Lin Manuel Miranda is a huge fan of The West Wing and the show inspired him to write Hamilton. He even dropped a few West Wing easter eggs into the lyrics, and the die-hard fans are having a lot of fun picking them out.

If you and I had coffee...

You'd notice and bring up the fact that my hair is a lot shorter than it was the last time we had coffee. Last week, I decided to chop it off. It went from my lower back to chin-length and it was the best decision I've made in a long time. The truth is, I've been thinking about cutting it for a while, but with salons being closed because of the pandemic, I had to wait. Thankfully, they were allowed to open recently and I got right on the schedule because I had come very close to cutting it myself a few times. My hair is so thick and heavy, I always do this funny thing where I weigh myself before I get it cut and then right after to see how much I lost. This time, it was about ten inches and it equaled about FIVE pounds of weight loss. I was shocked.

If you and I had coffee...

I'd share that I watched the recent Red Table Talk with Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith. I honestly had not heard of the show until it was trending on Twitter, so I tuned in to find out why. The episode that was being discussed was about the relationship Jada had while she and Will were separated, touted as an affair by many. I have so many thoughts about their conversation and some of the things they shared, but one thing I took away from watching it was that it is possible to love someone through thick and thin. When so many couples would have walked away when faced with this hurdle, Will and Jada are ride or die. They don't seem to be afraid to talk stuff out, work on their problems, and learn to laugh it off once the healing has begun. I really like that about them.

If you and I had coffee...

I'd tell you that I am so ready for autumn. This summer has been so hot and humid, and because of the pandemic and all of the other craziness going on, I'm over it. I don't know what the world will look like in a few months, but I know I will be feeling more inspired when the weather is cooler, it's jeans and sweater weather, and the leaves are crunchy on the ground. I'd ask if you are also feeling the same restlessness and what has helped break it up for you because I am needing some ideas for how to get myself out of this funk. Help!

If you and I had coffee...

We'd finish our drinks just as the cafe patio population starts growing. I'd air hug you and promise that we'll see each other again soon - even if we are back to virtual COVID coffee dates.

  1. If you and I had coffee I would lament about how exhausting my job has been lately. I would ask your advice, but probably not take it, because that's who I am and I need to learn things all on my own. I would tell you that I do like my job, but each day I work I dread going in - getting yelled at, nonstop ringing phones, being unable to get sick pets scheduled in a timely manner. I would tell you I miss the old days, when it wasn't all so hard.

  2. Oh, I'm sorry to hear about your job and hope things get less stressful for you there. I'm with you on missing the old days. Hopefully, the "new days" when this is all over will be better than the old. :)

  3. I haven't seem Hamilton yet, but I've heard loads of good things about it in the Instagram world. I might have to get Disney+ for a little while. I know a lot more about English history (I'm reading a book about George III at the moment!) than US history, so I'm sure it will be interesting to watch. I sympathise with you about the hot weather. We're having lovely cool weather at the moment, but I know how oppressive the hot, humid weather can be. But hopefully having shorter hair will help you feel less weighed down - I like to get a short haircut in summer too. I agree with you about being tired, and I hope you're able to find things that bring you energy and joy even in the midst of all the hard, chaotic things. Lovely to have coffee with you today, Lecy.

  4. I admire your interest in the history of other countries. Many people aren’t interested in their own country’s roots, let alone other places in the world. I’ll bet that book on George III is a good one. And you’re right. It is nice to have a short haircut in the hot summer. :)

I have not understood the whole Hamilton hype to be honest but then I haven't watched it yet. I don't even know what is is about. But I am glad you liking it so much.
Loosing five pounds in hair is really shocking. I can not even image how thick and how much hair that must be as having fine and thin hair myself (unfortunately) But with the heat it must feel like you can breathe again. Summer here has been ok. We started out with lots of heat but then it cooled down for the last weeks and it has even be raining. I don't mind having lower temperatures but I am looking forward to winter. But then with the whole >cover hanging over us it might not be too great getting into cold season...

  6. Yes, I'm feeling much cooler with the hair cut. And I hope that the winter will be better, in terms of the virus and hopefully lower numbers.
